Peter Pan (1911), J. M. Barrie's novelization of his celebrated stage play, follows Wendy Darling and her brothers as Peter Pan teaches them to fly and spirits them off to Neverland — a country of mermaids, fairies, Lost Boys, and a one-handed pirate captain with a long memory and a longer grudge. There Wendy plays mother to the Lost Boys until Captain Hook strikes, and the final reckoning between Peter and Hook decides who sails home. One of the founding works of modern children's literature, and the origin of a character who has never quite let any of us grow up.
